Sweet Chariots

I have added Sweet Chariots to my list of Hong Kong blogs.  A fellow Brit, and a colleague of Simon (whose blog persuaded me that if he could do it then I could).  He’s obviously a rugby fan.

My recent post about comments on blogs seemed to provoke surprisingly strong feelings, but one useful thing that came out of it was that Ron reminded that I am probably not doing very much to promote other blogs.  There are two main reasons – the first is lack of time (you can call it laziness if you wish), and the other is that I am unsure what to do for the best.  I don’t feel inclined to have a huge long list of blogs on my main page, and I am restricting myself to the ones that I personally read on a regular basis, so that there is some element of recommendation.  What I intended to do was set up a longer Blogroll on a separate page, but I had technical problems and then I forgot about it.  I’ll try to get back on the case.

Any recommendations for Asian or world blogs much appreciated!

    I wouldn’t feel obliged to include every blog if that’s not what you want to do. Just do what you’re comfortable with.
    Some such as Conrad, Phil and Ron link to many other blogs, and that’s fine and generous of them. I link to these guys purely because I read and enjoy their blogs regularly.
    On the other hand, some just include a couple of or no links, even though several people link to them. I may still link to them, whether they link back or not.
    I include those I visit regularly, and even those are limited to “Hong Kong blogs”, whatever that means; and that is what the linklist is called. If a blog no longer seems to be ‘HongKongy’ enough, I will take it off. No offence intended to whomever.

    You could try what The Sassy Lawyer has done. Periodiclly, once a week, she spotlights Asian Weblogs of interest. Thay are filed under a separate category.
    And thanks for being included in your blogroll I feel Honored.

    My link policy is a bit different from Conrad and Phil (I guess).
    When I have sufficient time, I want to lose Blogroll (not very helpful even in paid version) and instead transfer the links to Typepad links.
    I am planning to link at least 5 good blogs from each city/country in Asia and will leave it at that.
    I don’t mind who links me or does not and sometimes, when we promote other blogs in specific posts, the blog owners are not even aware we promoted them (e.g. Sweet Chariots).
    Basically, readers who come to my blog do click on to the right side bar bloglist and go there.
    Depending on who went where, I tend to add up more links to that category (HK and China being the highest).
    I only drop blogs that once linked See Lai and then without a courtesy of email or any decenct explanation drop See Lai for good.
    This may be my problem, but it is part of blogger etiquette that you inform the one you linked (if you have their email) and inform with some reason (although it is your blog) when you drop them.
    Otherwise, link lists are nothing special and no, links or comments don’t generate considerable hits.
    Chris is right about having to spend considerable time. But if you spread the time regularly (say 5 or 10 minutes per day), promoting your blog could be fun and easy.
    Mostly you are looking at search engine submissions and particularly aware about your title and relation to topics in your post.
    All text and no picture also generates fewer hits for blogs as readers feel strained and so even political or cartoon or Hong Kong pictures from time to time would be a great idea. That is my personal opinion, but all bloggers who get high hits have pictures from time to time – BWG, Conrad, Hemlock, Phil, and Shaky, not to mention photo blogs like Madame Shutterfly and mixed blogs (text + photo) like my own blog.

    I actually do have a link policy. Not all the blogs I link to are on the front page. In fact when I get the time and motivation (which I am somewhat lacking right now) I will put the escape section back up. Essentially out of principle I link to every Hong Kong blog on the front page. For China, Asia and ROW I link to ones I like or have a reason for promoting. THere are a lot more in the database but you just can’t see them right now. That also includes all the other categories that are not blogs.
    My primary concern has been to support Hong Kong blogs. THere is only one I do not list because of some unpleasentness a while back which I am sure you will all remember.
