Today’s SCMP Technology supplement has a small piece about the blog awards controversy, quoting from Phil’s comments on the subject. The journalist (Neil Taylor) is sympathetic to Phil’s argument, but of course by running the story he is also giving publicity to the ‘other’ awards.

Meanwhile, I notice that Giles from Sweet Chariots has taken to calling himself ‘english’. What’s this – has the name Giles suddenly lost its appeal?

Anyway, whatever he is calling himself these days, he is struggling with his laptop. Amazingly, he seems to have been sending and receiving emails, surfing the Internet, and downloading naughty illegal MP3s, all without having anti-virus software installed. So, no great surprise that his laptop was packed full of viruses and eventually stopped working. 298 Computer Centre to the rescue, and I think the guy there couldn’t quite believe the mess!

i originally started by calling myself english in coimments sections on simonworld, then when simon kindly showed me how to set my own up it seemde to default to giles and i couldn;t work out how to change it.
blogger now allows you to change your posting name easily however, and given the pasting Giles from Misohoni is taking as a result of the BlogAwards i thought now would be a good time to go back to my original moniker so i don’t cop some flak in passing – and it has the advantage of making sure everyone knows i’m not welsh or scottish!

If you don’t have anti-virus software, doesn’t your PC build up its own immunity?

“thrice” – what an excellent word. i shall try to use it more in conversation.
and i do think it would be 3 times useful than most other computer features don’t you?

By the way, norwegian was me. I decided to use that name to avoid getting flak for making daft comments, and so people know that I am neither Swedish nor Danish.

How do we know it was him? He might be just claiming the credit for someone else’s comments.

Oh my God, now there’s Giles, the sequel.
Interesting the antipodean teaching the Englishman his own language…again.

excuse me? i may have missed something? who is teaching who what?
if you are referring to the word “thrice” then i think you will find that back in Mud Island no-one has used that word for several decades.
Then English language has moved on, the Australian one clearly hasn’t.

I would say “English” that this move of yours was very smart indeed. Given the present circumstances…
    Cheers!

Time for a tour of what’s happening in Asia… May 12th marks an important day in Hong Kong history. Hemlock has announced his intention to run for Chief Executive. This is clearly the best argument yet for full democracy in Hong Kong, now. Chris notes…
