It was only a matter of time

Well, well.  The BBC are reporting that Keegan and Newcastle part company, which must be the the least surprising football news of the year.  The only surprise would be that he lasted a full eight months.

Back in January I said (Mad):

I thought Newcastle's board were going to spoil the fun when they said that they would take their time finding a manager and might consider appointing a foreigner.  Gérard Houllier was mentioned, and then Didier Deschamps was suddenly installed as favourite.  They even turned down Alan Shearer's bid for the job.  So far, so good.

Then last night they announced (drum roll) that, er, Kevin Keegan is returning as manager.

That's more like it.  The best part is that in a few months Keegan will get upset about something and resign, and the whole circus can start up again.

Apparently the thing he doesn't like this time is that he hasn't been able to buy all the players he wanted. 

[Update: the BBC are now reporting that Keegan has not been sacked but that his future is "unclear".]

    As a Toon fan – see my blog – this is Newcastle at its absolute stark-raving maddest. Following Newcastle is head-bangingly frustrating at the best of times, but this takes it to a stratospheric new level.
    We all breathed a sigh of relief when Mike Ashley arrived – and then again when he took the debt off our books. Following that good start, who would have thought that he could make England’s worst managed club even worse? Not me.
    But he did it! Sometimes I think we should just take an influx of young and ambitious Wharton/Harvard MBA types and let them have a shot. At least they are qualified managers.

    All this confusion is so disrespectful to Kev – he deserves far better treatment. If he walks now, the Toon board will be lynched by black and white stripey mob. Where does Wise fit in, in all this?

    It seems likes it a case of Keegan vs. Wisey. One has to go. And I don’t see many banners outside St. James’ saying “Don’t go Wisey!”….
