Over the top

I am getting heartily sick of all the po-faced, santimonious, nonsense that has written about Zinedine Zidane’s "mad moment" in the World Cup Final.

Marco Materazzi obviously set out to wind up Zidane, and he succeeded.  Had Zidane been more calculating he could have waited and kicked Materazzi when he had the ball, but he was much more straightforward and simply head-butted him in the chest. 

It wasn’t really vicious and Materazzi shouldn’t have been surprised and wasn’t seriously injured.  Of course the referee had no choice but to send him off, and presumably FIFA will now suspend him from games he will never play, but was it really "shameful"?  Will history forget all his other achievements and just remember this "mad moment"?  It seems unlikely.

    Can they not check the footage and see what Materazzi said (use lip readers?) or did, and then ban him too? That would at least set the reocrd straight.

    This pathetic episode confirms my opinion that the World Cup football game is for nancy boys and wimps – viz. the spectators.
    Head-butting, eye-gouging, crutch-clutching, groin-reassembly, strangulation and stiff-arm tackles are taught on Day 1, 8 a.m. age 5, to every self-respecting rugby footballer from the southern reaches of France. It is a real pleasure to watch the carnage.
    I played rugby for 17 years and my entire body, except for one bit, hurts real good. My favourite all-time sports photo is of my last second jaw-breaking of my opposite number in order to win a rugby championship.

    If they banned him and had a replay, that would send a good message and make a shit-load of money. The first ever World Cup final replay! And with a bit of luck the Frogs would win, which would piss the Eyeties off enormously.
