Ordinary Gweilo

It's not big and it's not clever, it's just a Brit in Hong Kong writiing (mainly) about Hong Kong

I thought the Magic TV 5000 was hugely over-priced at HK$4980 (as per their website and Post Magazine), and so I am not surprised that Fortress is now selling it for HK$3999 – which is more reasonable but still too high.

There’s another similar box from Topcon, at HK$2199 for 160gb and HK$2599 for 250gb, and this does have dual tuners.  So I am sticking with my theory that Magic TV need to add a second tuner and reduce the price to HK$3000.  I think they will in the next couple of months.

The Magic TV has some advantages.
You can copy files across to a USB hard drive, plus it has 500gb to begin with.
Also, it can output to a SD TV. (But can all set top boxes do that?)
I’ve been looking at this machine, and quite like it. The specs are good, the box looks cool, they have a very nice website, but some information is lacking.
    I don’t even have a HD TV.
Dual tuners is a big advantage though.
Let’s see what the next version of the models are.
I’ve had a HDD recorder for a couple of years. It’s probably the best most useful single piece of electronics I’v ever bought.
I laugh when I think of anyone using a video tape any more.
